Based on an experiment from Janice Van Cleave

*Predictions/Hypothesis (What do you think is going to happen?)

  • I think when you mix them together they will explode because of the alka seltzer. Celine
  • I think the water is going to fizz and make colored bubbles.
  • I think bubbles are going to fizz up.
  • I think the alka selter is going to blow up. Rick
  • I think the water is going to bubble and turn red.Elizabeth

Procedures (What you observed or did during the experiment)

  • 1. Use a plastic soda or water bottle (16 to 20 oz).
  • 2. Pour one cup of water into the bottle.
  • 3. Add 10 drops of food coloring-swirl the bottle to mix.
  • 4. Fill the bottle with cooking oil to height shown in diagram.
  • 5. Break an Alkaseltzer tablet in half. Drop one of the pieces into the bottle. Make observation.

Observations/Data (What happened as a result of your procedures)

  •   When I pourd the oil and the food coloring into the bottle it didn't mix and the oil stayed at the top.
  • The liquid vibrated in the bottle because it has less mass.
  • The water was at the botle was at the botom because it was heavier.
  • When we put the alka seltzer in the water it bubbled up.

*Results  (Why you think what you observed happened...in your own words)

  • I think the liquid bubbled up because The sodium-carbonate releases a gas or air will make it bubble up.
  • When Mr.Parker put the Alka-selter in the water bottle the water started to fiz.
  • I think the water bubbled up and down because when the alkasetzer is put in the water the bakingsoda and citric acid react to form gas bubbles.

*Conclusion  (What actually happened...use vocabulary learned)

  •

Further Research/Questions (For extra credit unlsee assigned...any further questions?  Or go on the internet, research the topic, and teach us something!)

  •  What will happen if we put more than one alka selzter?Elizabeth
  • Sodium bicarbonate is used to reduce stomach acids , treats heart burn, indigestion, stomach disorders, and kidney disorders.nick
  • What will happen if you only put water, oil, and the alka selzer? Destiny
